A Bunya Mts Christmas Carol Evening

Being only our second year for presenting Carols, we were delighted with over 80 people being in attendance. Generous funding afforded face-painting for the children, the production of a song book for the audience, and a new Santa outfit. The venue was a challenge given the renovations to Dandabah. it was decided to shift it across to the veranda of the old school house (the bat house).

Attendees brought chairs and blankets and settled to watch and participate in a diverse range of Christmas Carol activities. The program included a variety of carols with audience participation, two choirs – the inaugural performance of the Bunya Singers, and the Kingaroy Spanish Class Choir. Meg Noack shared a children’s Christmas story and Noel Noack gave a presentation about a Christmas tradition. Of course, there was a visit by Santa, decked out in his new attire, who made a grand appearance on a Christmas decorated fire engine supplied by the Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade.

Children were gifted a copy of the new ‘Meet The Bunya Mountains Locals’ booklet and a small bag of lollies.

Special thanks to QPWS for making the venue available, and to TILT Coopers Gap Wind Farm, whose donation helped to make this event that much more enjoyable.

Play Music on Nature's Porch Day
Burton's Well Bunya Mountains
Saturday, August 30, 2025

Play Music on the Porch is a global event to celebrate peace.

More information at the official website.

Cold weather and blustery winds became a handicap to the success of Play Music 2025. It impacted on both the number of attendees and how long they stayed. It also saw many of the performers limit their stage time to one ‘set’. It just got too cold to hang around.

We were treated to a variety, and standard of performance that was enjoyed by all those who braved the weather. Performers included:

  • The Burnett Celtic Pipes and Drums,

  • The Kingaroy Ukesters,

  • The Nanango Shedders Community Music Group,

  • Dalby Musical ‘Bush Poet’ – Bill Ramsey,

  • an actual bush poet, specializing in Banjo Patterson’s work – Harry Pickering.

There were a few individual musicians who joined in with the other performers.

Food was provided by the Blackbutt Lions, and unfortunately, issues with power supply meant that the coffee van was inoperable.

Special thanks to RES Tarong West Wind Farm for their generous donations. Funds were also raised through the BMCAI Raffle and the sale of locally home made treats. Thanks to the BMCAI who contributed.

Weaving workshop

We had perfect weather which meant that the Bonye Bair Bush University could be used for key parts of the program.

The day started with a Welcome and Smoking Ceremony presented by Shannon Bauwens up at Fishers Lookout. Then moving onto the university, the subcommittee provided morning tea as visitors watched performances by the Wakka Wakka dances, and a presentation by Bruce Phillips on Murri Tucker Bush Foods.

Attendees then moved onto BPAC where a BBQ lunch was provided by BPAC, and desserts by BMCAI (supplied by The Tavern). Following lunch, an Aboriginal Cultural Weaving Workshop and a jewellery making workshop (the latter oriented to the children in attendance) were available to attendees.

May 14-15, 2023

After the success of Walks Back In Time in 2022, another event was held, this time featuring visits to Munro's Camp, Andersen's Tramway, Birding with Bernice Seton, hearing about the Bunyas/Bjelke-Petersen connection and a visit to the Bush University amongst others.  A whip cracking display from the students at St Johns Lutheran School entertained us at lunch time too!

September 17-18, 2022

Visitors and locals were welcomed to significant and historical places of interest on the mountain - including some places that are usually out of bounds.  A bus transported us around from place to place and lunch was enjoyed on the green at Dandabah.  An historical enactment was held on the verandah of the old school house.
